Evidence of cigar box guitars exists from the mid-1800’s when cigars that were usually shipped in crates were transitioned to smaller, portable boxes. While early cigar box guitars were rather crude, they have evolved into modern, playable folk art.

Like a standard guitar, cigar box guitars can be made as acoustic or electric. Pickups can be added to some acoustic cigar box guitars to allow them to be played through an amplifier or PA. These typically have a single coil pickup which reproduces the acoustic sound better. With thicker and heavier boxes, humbucker pickups are typically installed for heavier and more distorted sounds. Our guitars are designed to be tuned to Open G which is perfect for beginners and advanced players.

While there might be the occasional guitar box guitar in our shop, most are custom projects which allow you to be involved in the design process. This includes providing your own box if you have one that’s special to you.
